«Chernobyl» diagnosis

Some tragedies never end. The Chernobyl accident happened 34 years ago, but its consequences still remind us.

An area of 2,600 square kilometers in Ukraine and Belarus, which is part of the exclusion zone, will be contaminated over the next 24,000 years.AndtheenvironmentalproblemsinChernobylarestilltopical.

The nuclear accident at Chernobyl and disaster at Fukushima in Japan are the only two events that have ever been classified by the index «Level 7». This is the highest level on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.

How many people died in Chernobyl?

The initial explosion led to the death of two workers. 134 station staff and emergency workers suffered acute radiation syndrome due to high doses of radiation and  28 of them later died.

To this day, five million people still live on heavily contaminated lands in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.

According to the General Director of «National Scientific Center of Radiation Medicine», Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Dmitry Basyuka, the impact of the accident on the health of people is primarily connected with the direct effect of ionizing radiation. One of the worst consequences of cancer. Their rate of occurrence depends on the dose received. Among the «early» oncology, the medical profession secretes leukemia, breast, and thyroid cancer. People who have experienced radiation exposure are at risk of these diseases.

In the 30 years following the accident, the total number of cases of thyroid cancer among persons under 18 years of age in Ukraine, Belarus, and the four most contaminated regions of the Russian Federation was more than 20,000. Only in recent years in Ukraine with this diagnosis 7 thousand young patients were operated on.

Joint research by Ukrainian and American scientists has established a causal relationship between the ingestion of radiation in childhood, adolescence, and the increase in the incidence of the disease. Most cancer patients were under 14 at the time of the accident. This means the nuclear reactor can still kill, and Chernobyl is still dangerous right now.

Over the years, Ukrainian medicine has acquired bitter but priceless experience in:

Ukraine has a State register of victims of the Chernobyl accident, which makes it possible to monitor their health.

As a result of many years of work and the efforts of medical personnel and early diagnosis, mortality from thyroid cancer has decreased to 1 percent of all cases.

After the accident at the nuclear power plant in Japan, the experience of Ukrainian doctors and researchers became of global importance. Dozens of Japanese medical personnel have come to learn from Ukrainian specialists about the effects of radiation. Scientific monographs and methodical materials of our scientists have been translated into Japanese and successfully used by Japanese colleagues.

Medical assistance to victims of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant needs improvement, development, and support

Professor Dmitry Bazika emphasizes that the personal perception of the human being is an important element in the fight against the radiation-related disease. Our compatriots do not sink into disease, but, together with the medical profession, fight it with courage. Today more than ever before it is important to create special services for group and individual psychological support of patients. Such methods have proved to be effective in the case of the already established UNESCO centers and the few volunteer organizations. Until Chernobyl is forgotten, and our task is to learn to face the challenges of the time.

At the moment, the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is clean and ready to tell you a lot of sad facts about the tragedy
the ruins of the 4th reactor are hidden under the reliable New Safe Confinement.
