The Red Forest and the Bridge of Death in Chernobyl are the most iconic locations of the Zone

Chernobyl is perceived in different ways. A forest where mutant animals live – this is how it is shown in the game “Stalker”. The territory where physical anomalies are found – this is the place presented in the film of the same name. The zone as “the cornerstone of history” is the world of the “Chernobyl” series, which even left the cult “Game of Thrones” behind. The biologists are sure that the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is an amazing example of ecological revival.

Chernobyl has become so many-sided not in one day. This place is fertile ground for the growth of myths and “urban” legends. Next, let”s talk about the two most “mythologized” (after the Chernobyl NPP) locations of the “Zone” – the Red Forest and the Bridge of Death. Both of these objects became “dangerous” on the day of the disaster.

The red forest of Chernobyl

Chernobyl Red forest – trees that “met” a radioactive cloud. If you want to know what happens to a plant when exposed to strong radiation, take a look at the Red Forest. This location cannot be seen up close as it is still very radioactive. The guides of the travel company will definitely show you this place from a safe distance!

There is really something to see. In 1986-1987, a forest area of 4.5 thousand hectares was located in the zone where the exposure dose rate was 500 mR/h. During this time, the area “received” 8000-10,000 glad. At night, the infected forest glowed, because the enzymes of wood tissue interacted with radioactive elements.

The contaminated area was divided into several zones:

Today the red forest is being restored – young spruces and pines are growing here. However, in some spruces needles up to 4.5 cm long are formed, and in pines there are needles 10-14 cm long.

Already in 1987, most of the forest was buried. The trees were felled, laid in trenches and covered with a layer of earth 1 meter high. A rampart 2.5 m high and 3.5 kilometers long was poured around it. Scientists feared that dry trees would become a source of radiation in the event of a fire, so the liquidation began even before the dispute about its expediency was finally resolved. Unfortunately, the researchers later found that the plants were too close to the groundwater…

The Bridge of Death – the legend of a city that disappeared forever

The road leading to the Chernobyl exclusion zone passes through a bridge over the railway. From here you can see the 4th block of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the “Arka” object. On April 26, it was full of curious people: residents of Pripyat came to the bridge to see the burning reactor. They didn”t know that the level of radiation on the road reaches 500-600 roentgens per hour.

Soon this place was cordoned off from two sides. The police passed only cars and the drivers were advised to drive as fast as possible … According to the city legend, all the people who came to the bridge that day soon died of radiation sickness. For obvious reasons, it is impossible to establish whether this is true or not. But even today, the level of radiation here reaches 150-200 microroentgens per hour. And this is despite regular cleanings… Today the only opportunity to see this place is an excursion to Chernobyl.
