There is hardly a person in Ukraine who has not heard about the Chernobyl accident of the 1986 year. Most also know that as a result of this catastrophe, a city called Chernobyl was completely evacuated. In fact, today the small town Chernobyl can be called conditionally inhabited, as about two thousand people work on a rotational basis here. In the settlement there is a hotel and a cafe for tourists, and on the streets you can meet workers – checkpoint employees, hotel attendants, etc. The police catch stalkers – people who entered the territory illegally, unlike participants in official excursions to Pripyat, who come to the zone legally with all permits.
So is the ‘ghostly’ glory of the Zone a myth? Not at all. There is a huge, mysterious and very atmospheric phantom town – Pripyat. At the same time, some people are not even aware of its existence. Many believe that only one object bears the name ‘Pripyat’ is a river in Chernobyl, Kyiv region, flowing through the Exclusion Zone.
To see, safe and official, the city, which has become one of the main locations of the Stalker game, is possible together with the Trips-to-Chernobyl team of guides. An excursion to Pripyat (the price of tours is available even for students) is a great idea for an extreme weekend.
Today Pripyat is a classic ‘post-apocalyptic world’. The local landscapes seem to get off the TV screen… Abandoned amusement park. Schools and kindergartens, where toys thrown by children are still lying on the floor. A hospital where the floor is covered with moss. A bookstore that can be seen even in Pripyat ‘Stalker’. And of course, deserted streets overgrown with trees, high-rise buildings with broken windows and forest animals which have long considered the city their own. Here you can meet wolves, foxes and even deer.
The picture is complemented by the howl of the wind, which always sings here a special, ‘Chernobyl’ symphony. His musical instrument is Pripyat itself. Its empty curved houses, like large accordions with hundreds of windows-buttons, wide streets covered with trees, and of course, huge administrative buildings, the labyrinths of which resemble the ‘insides’ of huge wind instruments.
It’s a sad fact. Usually, attention is not focused on this, but inside the apartment of Pripyat residents are almost empty. All things from dwellings were stolen by looters.
For those, who want to get acquainted with Pripyat, the excursion will definitely become the pearl of your travel collection. The atmospheric ghost town will amaze you with its gloomy beauty, while tour guides will tell you about the past of this place. Pripyat was built together with the nuclear power plant. It existed only 16 years, but in its best years this place was amazing. The buildings, decorated with decorative panels and ceramics, sparkled with whiteness, and the streets were simply fragrant, because 30 thousand rose bushes were planted on the flower beds.
People came here from all over the Union, so the annual population growth was 1,500 people (and this despite the fact that only 47,500 people lived here).Residents of the Land of Soviets, exhausted by deficits and poverty, felt in this ‘atomic town’ as if they were guests of a magical land of the future. And this is not strange: already in the 1980s there was a huge supermarket with carts, a large palace of culture with the best disco in Ukraine and an excellent bookstore.
Everything changed in April 1986. Even after the explosion, people did not know yet that on the 27th they would leave the ‘city of peaceful atom’ forever. Civilians did not even know about the scale of the accident and about the fact that they had already been subjected to monstrous radiation. The ‘temporary evacuation’ was announced at one o’clock in the afternoon, columns of buses drove up to the houses. People were advised to take only documents…. They were promised that during the evacuation the house would be guarded by the police. Already at 17.00 the city was empty.
